SCEDT (Chamber of Commerce) Mobilizes to Support Crown Land Deposition

This is the e mail that SCEDT circulated to every member.

Dear SCEDT Members,
The SCEDT Board of Directors is fully in support of this application for disposition of Crown Land. As representatives of the business community we ask that you send an e-mail by the deadline of June 18th, to Drew Frymire (drew.frymire@gov.bc.ca) expressing your views on this subject.
Please quote Land file #3410376.

Needless to say this is exactly opposite to the position the Association takes.

1 Comments:

  • The board of directors of SCEDT should not take a formal position on behalf of a membership that is required by municipal law to join through its business licence. The SCEDT board of directors should not make statements on behalf of their membership without any consultation. The mandate of SCEDT does not include taking a formal position on a land use decision.

The following is copied from the SCEDT website regarding their mandate and membership:

"The Summerland Chamber of Economic Development and Tourism (SCEDT) is a non-profit business organization made up of business license holders.
The mandate of SCEDT is to provide both tangible and intangible benefits to our members in particular, and our community as a whole."

Promotion and marketing of existing Summerland businesses is the main focus of SCEDT. Nowhere in this mandate, does it include lobbying on land use decisions. Membership in SCEDT is NOT OPTIONAL. I do not support the position of the Board of Directors. SCEDT should not be a lobby group when their membership did not join of their own free will.

As my husband and I own and operate two businesses in Summerland and DO NOT support the Crown Land Disposition, and have NO CHOICE in becoming SCEDT members, I am asking the SCEDT Board to retract their statement and take a neutral position on this issue.
