Alternatives to Growth

Here's an excellent site. Lots of good stuff. Kelowna folk should read the Boulder City case study!

  • It is, indeed, worthy of emulating. I frequently use some unkind words in describing our southern neighbour, but sometimes they are miles ahead of us. It was so unfortunate for the people of Oregon that they were unable to continue to support this organization. It would have been wonderful to see what a fully committed group could have done for that state. Even so, they have published many, many ideas that we could use for the purpose of our Association. Funding is important for any group such as ours, but we have to be willing to make a greater contribution than just gifts of money (although we aren't going to turn that down). We need to continue to publicize our point of view whenever possible. We need to beat down that (may I say, "Redneck") philosophy that "bigger is better." We need to think into the future, not 5 or 10 years, but 50 or 100 years, when most of us will be long gone and forgotten. If we could bequeath something to our grand children or great grandchildren it should be a gift that lasts forever. All we have to do is look at a country like England that was once covered in forests of oak trees and now has so few that they can literally be counted. But look at what they have done with that fantastic organization called the "National Trust"--forests, homes, castles (what's left of them), gardens are being protected for future generations.
I would like to conclude with the slogan on a bumper sticker that I had made for myself--"Most of the problems of the world are caused by people wanting to be important".
